Questions & Answers

We gathered below some of Ferquently Asked Questions:

WHO ARE YOU?

We are a brand from Poland that designs and handcrafts apparel and accessories for climbers and routesetters in its own tailoring workshop. The company was founded by Grzegorz "Ges" Grochal – a leading Polish climber of the 1990s, two-time winner of the Polish Cup in lead climbing, co-author of numerous multi-pitch routes in Poland and around the globe. In the company, Ges is in charge of creation and production.

WHERE ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MADE?

We sew our products in our own well-equipped workshop located at: Os. Na Skarpie 20, Krakow, Poland. We employ qualified and experienced sewing staff, thanks to whom all our products are made with the utmost care and attention to details.

You can read more about our workshop here – OUR WORKSHOP

WHO DO YOU SEW FOR?

First and foremost for the community of climbers and routesetters, but we also try to make our products universal enough for other activities as well as everyday applications.

If you care about where and how the clothes you wear are made, you appreciate high quality, craftsmanship, original design and personal touch in every product you use – then we sew exactly for you.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES YOU FROM OTHER BRANDS?

First of all, the fact that we have our own well-equipped tailoring workshop, which (although causing us some pains and challenges) allows us to offer you:

  • The highest quality, which we take care of at every stage of the production process;
  • Refined details, practical solutions tailored to your needs;
  • The possibility of continuous improvement of our products;
  • Warranty and post-warranty services.

A hole torn on the knee is quite common in climbing trousers. Such mechanical damage is not included in the scope of warranty. Yet, in the case of our trousers, you do not have to worry about it and search for a tailor who will undertake such a repair and do it well. With Agrest, you can count on our service, which we always price individually depending on the extend of damage. We try not to charge you more than the cost of our work.

- If requested by a customer, our products may be customised – customisation details are agreed individually (contact us: kontakt@agrestclimb.pl)

Strong team of ambassadors:

Our Team consists of top Polish climbers, instructors and routesetters.

We are proud that they trust us by promoting our products with their achievements.

A handcraft approach and creating our products according to the principles of design thinking.

Responsibility and operating in line with the principles of socially responsible business, e.g.:

  • Promoting the idea of repairing old clothes instead of buying new ones.

In addition to everyday servicing of our products, once a year we organize the campaign "Save clothes! Repair day at AGREST", during which you can bring your worn-out trousers (of various brands) to the workshop, and we will give them a second life free of charge.

  • Caring for high quality and durability, so that the products can serve for many years.
  • Acting in accordance with the principles of less waste by including recycled products in our production process, e.g. sewing limited series of upcycled wallets, using waste materials as stiffeners in our boulder bags, etc.
  • Delivering the products in cardboard packaging, without the use of plastic foil and artificial fillers; for larger shipments, recycled cardboard packaging is used; you can choose the option of delivery in recycled cardboard packaging when shopping online.
  • Supporting local charity initiatives.
  • Regular support for competitions and local climbing initiatives.
  • Organizing our own charity events (e.g. “support walls” – sewing a special collection of chalk bags and donating all the income from their sales to friendly climbing walls that were closed due to the Covid19 pandemic, sewing a limited series of chalk bags for Women’s Day 2021, all the income from which was donated to the Women’s Rights Centre in Krakow).

WHAT DOES YOUR PRODUCTION PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

  1. Idea – we have more than enough of these, so not all of the ideas have been implemented yet.

Ideas come to Ges's mind and then they are analysed and processed until they turn into the design.

  1. Design and tailoring pattern – Ges starts working on the design and tailoring pattern together with our irreplaceable seamstress, Beata, who brings his ideas down to earth and proposes realistic design solutions.
  2. Sewing the prototype

It often happens that we revisit the initial concept many times, making corrections to the pattern and refining the prototype. This process often takes several weeks before we reach the point where we are finally satisfied with the effect. Sometimes it happens that we do not reach this stage and the project goes into the "freezer" for some time or we abandon it completely.

  1. Pattern grading – we grade the prototype to create individual patterns representing each size.
  2. Cutting – so far, this has been done exclusively by Ges, the founder and co-owner of the brand. All products that we have created since setting up our company have been hand-cut by him.
  3. Sewing – this is done by our invaluable seamstresses with many years of experience. And it is a great advantage of our company – such quality of sewing is not to be found in large sewing factories that accept production orders from various brands.
  4. Quality control process is present at every stage of production.

Only if production is under continuous quality control, potential problems can be easily identified and quickly solved, thus avoiding costly mistakes.

  1. Photos – product photo shoot is arranged in a professional photographic studio.
  2. Preparation of product descriptions, size charts
  3. Posting new products at our online store
  4. Packaging
  5. Shipping

“IT’S ALL COOL, BUT FOR THE SAME PRICE YOU CAN BUY….”

WHY ARE YOUR PRICES AT THE LEVEL OF GLOBAL OUTDOOR BRANDS?

Of course, our products may seem too expensive to some or perhaps seem to be an unnecessary expense, but we would like you to take into consideration the following comparisons.

How would you explain these facts:

  • local craft beer is several times more expensive than beer of global brands though both bottles stand next to each other on the same supermarket shelf,
  • furniture from a carpenter is much more expensive than that made in large factories,
  • a local bakery offers better but also more expensive bread than that produced industrially.

The examples could go on and on...

Tailoring is a craft.

Of course, you may (as it is most often the case) mass produce your brand’s clothes in Far East sweatshops that employ cheap labour and offer low production costs. Mass production also gives you a position to negotiate prices of fabrics, accessories, etc.

However, in the world of fashion, there is still a clear distinction, and consequently, a large price gap between products by global brand and those made by small tailoring ateliers, launching only short unique collections.

What is our position?

We definitely pursue the art of tailoring craftsmanship.

Our workshop employs only 5 people. The production process of climbing trousers – which are our speciality – is demanding and time-consuming. Developing a comfortable, ergonomic design means weeks of hard work. Some models of our trousers are sewn on 8 different machines, and a single person is able to sew only 2.5 pairs a day. Beforehand, you also need to order material, cut it – and after completing the long production process – sell, pack and ship the product.

We manage to keep our prices at the level of mass-produced products due to the fact that we act both as a manufacturer and as a retailer and we have resigned from part of our profit margin. Retailing our products in outdoor stores would result in much higher prices. Otherwise, we would have to sell them at our production cost.

To sum up, we try to compete by means of quality, functionality and design.

Competing by lower prices? In the case of craft production, it is simply impossible.

Please don't get the impression that we are venting our frustrations and complaints here. Nothing of the sort. We really love our work, as it gives us a lot of satisfaction. We only wanted to draw your attention to certain technical aspects of the issue because with the hectic pace of everyday life, awareness of certain values sometimes eludes us all.

If you have any further questions, please contact us.
